Let the rumor mill for Jenson Button going to Williams next year kick into overdrive in 5...4....3...2....1...

I'd love to see this happen but Williams needs to get back into form. It was only 2 years ago when they were getting podiums just for the hell of it.

I think they got lucky in 2014 and their decline since then has shown that they don’t know how to develop a car anymore. In 2014 the Mercedes engine was so dominant that all they had to do was not fuck up. McLaren was a joke at the time and Force India started that season poorly due to budget issues and have since upped their game.

But from where JB is standing, Williams is still in much better form than McLaren-Honda is, and he doesn’t have all the time in the world to keep spending the last several years of his career waiting for McLaren to finally get their shit together. I think Williams would be a smart move for him. It also opens the door for Vandoorne to finally make his entry, and unlike Button, he actually has the time in his career to stick with McLaren as he and the team develop together. That theoretically opens up a Vettel-Red Bull/Hamilton-Mercedes type relationship for him to enjoy.

Williams aren’t though. McLaren Honda are at least with them and ahead on aero and chassis tracks. They’re only behind on reliability and that will change quickly next ear with the development token system gone.

I’m not saying Williams doesn’t have room to develop and improve, but I am saying I think them getting their shit together with their aero/chassis package is just as likely and doable as Honda getting their shit together with their PU’s.

Honda have an upward trajectory right now and being able to develop freely will lead to a spending war between the manufacturers, but it will also lead to them all getting pretty close to each other. Honda got it wrong initially and have been limited in their ability to make gains because of the token system and number of restricted parts. I think they have good reason for optimism for next year. They won’t be beating the Mercs on straight power, but they also won’t be as far behind.

Jenson will be forced to retire to make room for VanDoorne; Checo Perez will go to Williams if he so desires, otherwise it will be another sponsor-heavy driver that takes Massa’s place, perhaps someone like Nasr or Kvyat.
Also there is every chance they will bring about a new driver to the line-up, someone from F3 or GP2.

I believe what you state makes a lot of sense.
